NEXUS MUSLIM THREADS PROJECT

Engaging Muslim women with the wider community through a creative crafting & socialising project

Throughout 2011

Thanks to a grant from the Community Partnerships Fund of the Australia Council, Nexus Multicultural Arts is excited to be conducting a year-long program entitled Muslim Threads. The program, which will commence in early 2011, will involve community workshops or "working bees" as well as an exhibition, which will that bring together Muslim and non-Muslim women to work collaboratively on the creation of embroidered / quilted craftworks that tell stories of home origins, identity, migration, settlement and perceptions of new environments.

The unique Muslim Threads project will connect Muslim and non-Muslim communities through the familiarity, warmth, creativity and communality of domestic crafting skills. The project aims to support traditional skills in new migrants and reduce social isolation, to enhance social skills, to build tolerance and understanding between cultural groups and to tell feminine stories through creative works produced by quilting, weaving and allied domestic skills.

The Muslim Threads project is based on three years of research and planning and on the two successful and innovative Islamic Spectrum programs conducted by Nexus Multicultural Arts in 2008 and 2009.

Please contact Dr Noris Ioannou, Executive Director of Nexus Multicultural Arts, if you would like more information about the upcoming Muslim Threads project or would like to enquire about participating in the program in 2011. More information about the program will also appear on this page in coming months.
